Weekender – Lhasa

  • DAY 1 Arrive in Chengdu. Fly into Western China's gateway city to Tibet - Chengdu - on Friday mid-day. First time to Chengdu? Greet the pride of Sichuan - the giant panda - in the afternoon, followed by an evening including a leisurely stroll into the Three Kingdoms era Jinli Ancient Street, world-renowned Sichuan cuisine, and the must-see Sichuan opera. Alternatively, enjoy a leisurely afternoon bike ride in the countryside before the evening's entertainment.

    Accommodation: Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu
  • DAY 2 Chengdu to Lhasa (flight). Arriving mid-day, after some refreshments at your hotel, it is off to the heart of this ancient city and a walk through the lively Barkhor Bazaar that surrounds the venerated Jokhang Temple . It is an exotic experience to mix with nomads and religious pilgrims who have converged from all over Tibet. A well earned appetite will then be satisfied by one of the world's best kept secrets: Tibetan cuisine. Following dinner, an evening's entertainment of traditional Tibetan dance and singing will leave you with the sense you've passed through a time portal to an ancient past.

Accommodation: Four Points by Sheraton, Lhasa
  • DAY 3 Lhasa. Your second day in Lhasa begins with a tour of the 17th century Potala Palace , the former chief residence of the Dalai Lama. With walls as thick as 5 meters and containing over 1000 rooms, 10,000 shrines, and 200,000 statues, any length of time in this historic engineering wonder is considered an abbreviated tour. After lunch, it is a short drive to the foothills north of town where Sera Monastery sits. This includes the fascinating experience of seeing monks engage in their daily practice of religious debate. And before dinner, you are off to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Norbulingka , meaning "Treasure Park." The central feature of this 89 acre park and gardens is Norbulingka Palace - the traditional summer residence of the successive Dalai Lamas. After dinner you'll have one more chance to hunt for the perfect souvenirs in the Old Town before your departure the next morning.

Accommodation: Four Points by Sheraton, Lhasa
  • DAY 4 Lhasa to Chengdu (flight). This morning, as you bid a reluctant farewell to Tibet, you've already begun planning your next visit. A morning flight will take you back to Chengdu with lots of time to catch your afternoon connecting flight and be home by dinner. You may even choose to share your stories and show off some of your photos with friends and family that very evening. A weekend hard to match!
