Tibet will capture your senses with its history, culture, stunning natural beauty, and warm hospitality of its people. These five days in Lhasa are designed to take the guess work out of wondering how to most fully absorb the cultural and historical riches of this iconic city. The whole experience is packaged with distinguished taste, offering the luxury of the Shangri-La Hotel with views of the Potala Palace as your Lhasa home, and selecting the most rewarding dining that the city has to offer.

Lhasa boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites that alone combine to make the two hour flight from Chengdu worth the effort: Jokhang Temple, Potala Palace, and Norbulingka Park. Other highlights include the dramatic debates at Sera Monastery, a live traditional Tibetan music performance, a gourmet meal in a Tibetan home, and visiting a Tibetan rug factory for an introduction to their trade.

Our competent guides are on hand to allow every detail of your indulgence to be tailored to your interests. If you desire a full course cultural meal packed into a few days, this tour will not disappoint.

Lhasa In Style – Route & Itinerary

  • DAY 1 Chengdu to Lhasa (flight). Your tour commences with pick up in the morning at your hotel for a shuttle to Chengdu Shuangliu airport. Today you are flying to the roof of the world (3700m). It is hard to find such a short flight anywhere else on the planet where the geography, climate, elevation, and culture change so dramatically. After some refreshments in the unpretentious luxury of the Shangri-La Hotel, Lhasa , it is off to the heart of this ancient city and a walk through the lively Barkhor Bazaar that surrounds the venerated Jokhang Temple . It is an exotic experience to mix with nomads and religious pilgrims who have converged from all over Tibet. A well earned appetite will then be satisfied by one of the world's best kept secrets: Tibetan cuisine. During dinner, the enjoyment of traditional Tibetan music and dance will leave you with the sense you've passed through a time portal to an ancient past.

    Accommodation: Shangri-La Hotel, Lhasa
  • DAY 2 Lhasa. After an international breakfast buffet at the Shangri-la Hotel, this morning will take you on a leisurely stroll through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Norbulingka , meaning "Treasure Park." The central feature of this 89 acre park and gardens is Norbulingka Palace - the traditional summer residence of the successive Dalai Lamas. After lunch, it is a short drive to the foothills north of town where Sera Monastery sits. This includes the fascinating experience of seeing monks engage in their daily practice of religious debate. A full day already, an afternoon rest in the comfort of your hotel will precede enjoying one of Lhasa's more special dining experiences: dinner in a converted old Tibetan home.

    Accommodation: Shangri-La Hotel, Lhasa
  • DAY 3 Lhasa (day trip). Today's adventure is an overland day trip by private vehicle to mystical Yamdrok lake. The route to Yamdrok Lake will take you south of Lhasa, across the Yarlong Tsangpo River, up to Karola Pass for a visual treasure chest of highland scenery and the turquoise lake below. Upon arrival, a pre-arranged picnic will be enjoyed with panoramic views of the lake and its surrounding geography. An opportunity to engage with the local populations nearby will also allow for a better understanding of these hearty people and their fascinating lifestyle and customs. Local villagers will appear to show off their native Tibetan Mastifs and horses, while a short walk will increase your appreciation for how remote and untamed this land is. Returning to your hotel for a late afternoon rest provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy your complimentary spa treatment at the Shangri-La's Chi Spa. Dinner is offered out tonight at one of Lhasa's renowned Nepali/Indian restaurants followed by a stroll through the narrow lanes of Lhasa's old quarter.

    Accommodation: Shangri-La Hotel, Lhasa
  • DAY 4 Lhasa. Following breakfast, this morning's cultural highlight is a tour of the 17th century Potala Palace , the former chief residence of the successive Dalai Lamas. With walls as thick as 5 meters and containing over 1000 rooms, 10,000 shrines, and 200,000 statues, any length of time in this historic engineering wonder is considered an abbreviated tour. In 1994 the Potala Palace became a World Heritage Site, a beautiful and historical landmark for future generations to enjoy. A well deserved rest after lunch will be appreciated before a visit to one of Lhasa's Tibetan rug factories for an introduction to this fascinating trade and an opportunity to pick up a unique souvenir. Following a buffet dinner at the Shangri-La, this evening includes a massive 800 actor live performance on the mountains north of Lhasa dramatizing Princess Wencheng's impact on the history of Buddhism in Tibet.

    Accommodation: Shangri-La Hotel, Lhasa
  • DAY 5 Lhasa - Chengdu (flight). An optional early morning walk with the pilgrims around Potala Palace precedes an international buffet breakfast at your hotel. Your reluctant departure from the roof of the world is scheduled for mid-day.

*Your tour concludes upon departure from Lhasa.
